Diablo players spread a rumor that clicking a cow enough times opened a secret level. It was completely false. Blizzard loved it so much they built the Secret Cow Level for real in Diablo II (2000), a field of bipedal, halberd-wielding cows. The community willed an easter egg into being.
How to find it
First beat the game on the difficulty you're playing (kill Diablo in the original game, or Baal if you have Lord of Destruction). Then, in the Act I town with Wirt's Leg and a Tome of Town Portal, transmute them in the Horadric Cube to open a red portal.
