Privacy policy
Effective: 14 October 2026
The short version: we collect what the site needs to work, we don't sell it, we don't track you across other websites, and the public parts of your profile are public because that's the point of a record.
Who we are
Wild Wasteland is run from California, in the United States. Questions about your data go to legal@wildwasteland.com.
What we collect
- Account: your email address. If you sign in with Discord, Google or Twitch, the basic profile they share: your name, picture and email. We never see your passwords for those services.
- Profile: the username, display name, bio, links, country, pronouns, pinned trophies and title you choose. These are public.
- What you post and do: eggs, evidence, comments, upvotes, reports, discovery claims, contests, and "I found it too" confirmations. Eggs, evidence and comments are public. Your points are public through the leaderboards and your profile. Your votes and reports aren't shown publicly as yours.
- Picture fingerprints: when you upload a picture, your browser works out a checksum and a similarity code from it, so moderators can spot the same picture reused on different eggs. Photos are re-saved on your device before they upload, which drops any location data in them.
- Email settings: which emails you want, and a log of what we sent, so the optional ones never come more than three a day. (The email telling you a moderator removed something of yours, and why, always goes out.)
- Reports of illegal content: if you report something through Report illegal content, your name and email (when you give them), so we can tell you what we decided.
- Searches that found nothing: the words searched, so we know which games and eggs to add. Never who searched.
- Technical: standard server logs (IP address, browser, time), kept briefly for security and abuse prevention, and error reports (see Sentry below).
Who it goes to
We don't sell your data and we don't share it for advertising. These services handle it for us, only to run the site:
- Supabase: database, sign-in and stored pictures (United States)
- Vercel: hosting, plus anonymous page counts and page-speed readings (no cookies, nothing that identifies you)
- Resend: sends sign-in codes and the emails about your own record that you've chosen in Email settings
- Cloudflare Turnstile: the human check on the email sign-in, which sees your browser and IP address to tell people from bots
- Sentry: error reports, with the parts that would identify you turned off
- Discord, Google, Twitch: only if you choose to sign in with them
Other places your browser connects to while you use the site:
- YouTube, TikTok, X and Twitch: evidence videos use their players, which load nothing until you press play. YouTube's privacy-enhanced player sets no cookies until then.
- Image hosts: game covers and video stills load straight from where they're published (IGDB, Wikimedia, TVmaze, TMDB, Cover Art Archive and YouTube's image server). Like any website you load a picture from, they see your IP address and browser.
- The Internet Archive: when a moderator verifies a discovery, the source link is saved to the Wayback Machine so the proof outlives the original post. Only the link is sent.
- IndexNow (Bing): the addresses of new public egg pages, so search engines find them. Never anything about you.
Tracking across other websites, and Do Not Track
We don't track you across other websites, and no other company collects information about what you do across sites through ours. Because there's no such tracking, Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control signals have nothing to switch off here. If that ever changes, for example if the site shows ads, we'll update this policy first and tell you before it happens.
Cookies and storage on your device
We use cookies only to keep you signed in. Your browser also keeps your light or dark theme choice and an unfinished post's draft, which never leave your device unless you post.
Seeing, changing and deleting your data
- Change your profile anytime from Edit profile, and your emails from Email settings.
- Get a copy of everything you've put on the site with Download my data on your profile.
- To correct anything else, or to delete your account, write to legal@wildwasteland.com.
When an account is deleted, the account and profile are removed. The points ledger keeps its history in anonymized form. Published eggs stay on the record under their CC BY-SA license, credited to your former username unless you ask us to remove the name.
If you're under 18, you can have anything you posted removed from public view, or your name taken off it, by writing to legal@wildwasteland.com. Copies other people made, or that search engines kept, may not be gone everywhere.
Children
The site isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data. If we learn that a hunter is under 13, we delete their account and data.
Changes to this policy
We'll post the new version here with a new effective date. For material changes, we'll also tell you on the site and by email at least 30 days before they apply.
