Is a glitch really an easter egg?

We use a loose definition. If it's hidden or surprising, it's in. Glitches and exploits have their own types, so they're labelled as what they are.

Someone already posted my find. Can I still get credit?

Yes. That's why there are two credits. Documented by is whoever wrote it up here first and never changes. Discovered by is whoever actually found it, even if that was years ago on some forum. If the credit is already verified, tap "Contest this credit" on the egg and link your dated proof (an old video, a forum post, an archived tweet), and a moderator decides in public. If it isn't verified yet, post the proof in the egg's comments so the moderator sees it. A verified discovery is worth +100, five times what posting an egg pays.

What if the original finder isn't on the site?

Credit them anyway, as an outside credit with a link to where they posted it first. We also ask the Wayback Machine to save the source so the proof survives even if the forum doesn't.

An egg credits me under my old username. Can I have it?

Yes. On the egg, tap "Are you …? Claim this discovery" and link something that shows it's you. The easiest proof is a post from that old account naming your username here. A moderator checks it, and if it holds up the credit moves to your profile. Its +100 is yours once the credit is verified (right away if it already is).

Why did my egg get merged into another one?

Each egg gets one page, and the earlier post keeps it. Yours now redirects there. Your work isn't wasted, though. Put what the original is missing in its comments, tap I found it too, and if you found it first, contest the discovery credit.

How do points work?

Documenting an egg is +20. Finishing the write-up (a real description of 100+ characters, how to find it, what kind of egg it is, and evidence) is +10 more, automatically. A moderator verifying it is +10. A moderator featuring it as an example of a great write-up is +25. A verified discovery credit is +100. Every upvote you get is +1, up to 50 per egg. Reports that get accepted are +3, rejected ones −1. Every point is logged as it happens. Your profile shows the total and a month-by-month chart, and Download my data lists every one.

What's a hunt?

A race to find a game's easter eggs in a set window, often its launch week. Post what you find in that game while the hunt is on, and the points those eggs earn in the window count on the hunt's own board (the usual points, from posting, write-ups, verifications, upvotes and discovery credits). The top three on the final board get 🏆 and 🏅 trophies on their profiles, and everyone else on it a 🎖 with their place. The board settles two days after the close, so an egg that comes down in that time still takes its points off. The Hunts page lists what's on and what's coming, and each hunt's page has its dates in your own time.

What's the Wanted board?

Rumored easter eggs nobody has proved yet, each one a case. Log a clue on a case when you've seen something, and if you find it, post the proof from the case's page. The first egg that proves it and gets verified closes the case in its hunter's name, with the 🔎 Case closed trophy.

Can I lose points?

Only by losing the thing that earned them. A removed or merged egg gives back everything it earned. Gutting a finished write-up gives back its +10 (restore it and it comes back, once). Taking back an upvote returns the +1. A rejected report costs one point (−1). Nobody edits scores by hand, admins included.

Who runs a basket?

Volunteer moderators from that basket's own community. Want to moderate a basket you know inside out? Once you have 10 eggs in it and 30 days on the site, an Apply to moderate box appears on the basket's About tab; the rules say how moderation works. Mods get verification powers, a queue, and their name on the basket.

What's the deal with the timestamps?

The database writes the "documented" time on every egg, and nobody can change it afterward. Not the poster, not moderators, not us. That's how we settle who posted first.

Where do the backdrops come from?

The blurred picture behind a basket is official art from the game database, or a screenshot a hunter posted as evidence on a verified egg. Any signed-in hunter can change which one it is (on the basket's About tab), from those choices only. Nothing new gets uploaded, so nothing weird can end up back there.

Do samples count?

Yes. A sample is a piece of one track hidden inside another, so it counts. Post the egg in the basket of the track that did the sampling, and connect it to the track it lifted from as "samples" (or "interpolates" if it was re-played rather than lifted, or "covers" for a full re-recording). The original's basket then reads "sampled by", and the connections map draws the line. Songs get their own baskets, separate from albums, because sampling is track by track. Link both videos with timestamps, the sample and the original at the moment it was lifted, and the egg page plays them back to back.
