Fans have counted the syllables of Maynard's verses and found they follow the Fibonacci sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 5, 3, 2, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 8, 5, 3. The song's time signatures shift 9/8, 8/8, 7/8, and 987 is the sixteenth Fibonacci number. Drummer Danny Carey has confirmed the song's working title was 9-8-7; the full syllable chart is fan analysis. A spiral you can hear.
How to find it
Count the syllables of the first verse: "Black (1) then (1) white are (2) all I see (3) in my infancy (5)…" and keep going. Then count the beats of the chorus.
