By slipping through a wall at the end of World 1-2, Mario can reach the Warp Zone before the game finishes setting it up, and the pipes then send him to a level labeled "World -1": an underwater stage that loops back on itself forever. The real world number is 36, but the game draws it as a blank tile, hence the minus sign. The Japanese Famicom Disk System version leads instead to three strange minus levels. Miyamoto has said it was not intentional.
How to find it
In World 1-2, as Super or Fire Mario, go to the end of the level near the exit pipe and clip through the brick wall into the Warp Zone before the "Welcome to Warp Zone!" text appears, then enter the left or right pipe.
