Instead of taking the exit pipe at the end of World 1-2, you can jump up and run along the top of the level's ceiling to a hidden room greeting you with "Welcome to Warp Zone!". Its three pipes jump you ahead to Worlds 2, 3 and 4, and it is the secret that taught a generation to look above the screen.
How to find it
Near the end of World 1-2, jump onto the ceiling bricks just before the exit pipe and keep running right along the top of the level until you drop into the Warp Zone.
