Patches is FromSoftware's recurring con man, with versions in Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3. In Elden Ring he attacks when you open his chest, then begs for mercy at about half health. Spare him and he opens a shop, and later in his questline he kicks you off a cliff on Mt. Gelmir, the same ledge-kick trick he pulls in Dark Souls.
How to find it
Go to Murkwater Cave in Limgrave, clear the bandits and open the chest in the last room. Stop attacking when he grovels if you want his shop and questline.
