Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start on the title screen and Contra gives you thirty lives instead of three. Kazuhisa Hashimoto put the code in Gradius the year before because the game was too hard to test; Contra made it famous. It's the most-typed cheat in history and the reason a button sequence is a cultural password.
On the title screen, before pressing Start, enter Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, then Start (two players: B, A, Select, Start). The lives counter shows 30.
