The star statue in the castle courtyard has a plaque with tiny, smeared lettering. Players read it as "L is real 2401" and took it as proof Luigi could be unlocked. He can't: IGN offered $100 for a working method in November 1996 and nobody collected, and a 1998 Nintendo letter said the text means nothing. Others read the lettering as "Eternal Star".
How to find it
Go through the castle's ground floor to the courtyard out back. Walk up to the star statue in the fountain and zoom the camera in on the plaque at its base.
